In a region connected by vast oceans yet united by shared opportunities and challenges, collaboration remains one of the Pacific’s greatest strengths. From protecting borders and facilitating trade to strengthening institutions and supporting economic resilience, regional partnerships continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of Pacific communities.

It was against this backdrop that the Pacific Islands Tax Administrators Association (PITAA) was represented at the 28th Oceania Customs Organisation (OCO) Annual Conference by Head of Secretariat, Mr. Petero Maivucevuce, reaffirming PITAA’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and partnerships across the region.

Hosted in Fiji under the theme “Scaling Up the Commitment of Customs to Protect and Grow our Pasifika Communities,” the conference brought together Heads of Customs Administrations, regional organisations, development partners and technical experts from across Oceania to discuss shared challenges and opportunities facing the region.

For PITAA, participation in the conference provided a valuable opportunity to engage with customs leaders and regional stakeholders on issues that directly impact Pacific economies and communities. While tax and customs administrations have distinct responsibilities, both play an important role in supporting government revenue collection, facilitating trade and contributing to national development priorities. Notably, five Heads of Customs Administration also serve as Heads of Tax Administration, further highlighting the close connection between customs and tax functions in the Pacific.

Throughout the conference, delegates explored a range of key topics, including border protection initiatives, maritime security, trade facilitation, customs modernisation and passenger movement across the Pacific. Discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration, information sharing and innovation in responding to emerging risks while maintaining efficient and secure borders.

Speaking on the value of regional engagement, Mr. Maivucevuce noted that forums such as the OCO Annual Conference create important opportunities for Pacific institutions to learn from one another and strengthen partnerships.

“The Pacific region is connected by many common opportunities and challenges. Conferences such as this provide an important platform for dialogue, knowledge sharing and collaboration. By working together, our administrations can build stronger institutions and deliver better outcomes for our communities,” he said.

The conference also highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships in supporting capacity building, digital transformation and regional resilience. These discussions align closely with PITAA’s ongoing efforts to support its member administrations through knowledge sharing, professional development and strengthened cooperation among Pacific revenue authorities.

Mr. Maivucevuce’s participation reflects PITAA’s continued commitment to regional dialogue and collaboration, ensuring Pacific voices remain at the centre of conversations that shape the future of the region. This commitment will continue through the PITAA Annual Heads Meeting, scheduled to be held in Koror, Palau, in September this year.
