With a shared vision of strengthening revenue systems across the Pacific, the Pacific Islands Tax Administrators Association (PITAA) Head of Secretariat, Mr. Petero Maivucevuce is representing PITAA at the IMF-PFTAC Regional Workshop on Tax Expenditure Assessment and Reform, held from October 27 to 30 in Nadi, Fiji.

Organized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Pacific Financial Technical Assistance Centre (PFTAC), the workshop brings together senior officials from regional finance ministries and tax administrations to enhance transparency and efficiency in tax systems across the Pacific.

The four-day program focuses on tax expenditure reporting, evaluation, administration, and governance that are key elements in promoting equitable and effective fiscal policies. Funded through the IMF Japan Special Account (JSA) project “Domestic Revenue Mobilization in Pacific Island Countries,” the workshop aims to strengthen Pacific nations’ capacity to improve revenue frameworks and fiscal sustainability.

Mr. Maivucevuce highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing regional tax challenges:

“Workshops like these provide an invaluable platform for Pacific countries to share experiences, strengthen knowledge, and collectively build transparent and resilient tax systems.”

Key sessions cover corporate income tax, investment incentives, VAT and trade tax expenditures, and governance frameworks, led by subject experts Ms. Thornton Matheson, Mr. Pierre-Pascal Gendron, Mr. Peter Mullins, and Mr. John McAlister.

Reflecting on PITAA’s ongoing work, Mr. Maivucevuce added,

“PITAA remains committed to supporting its members through technical collaboration and capacity development that drive sustainable tax reform in our region.”

As a regional body, PITAA continues to champion initiatives that promote fiscal transparency and strengthen tax administration across its member countries, reinforcing its role as a key partner in advancing effective, inclusive, and sustainable tax systems in the Pacific.
